Sustainability and corporate events in Ireland
If this week was a colour, it would be green.
With the COP15 United Nations Climate Change Conference taking place in Copenhagen the word ‘sustainability’ is on everybody’s lips, and it’s no different in the conference and events industry – in fact Conference and Incentive Travel are running a special ‘Green Week’.
Of course everyone wants to stake their claim to running truly green events, and assert that their business really is sustainable. Despite the crowded marketplace we felt that we should wade into the discussion, because there is something genuinely exciting is happening in Ireland at the moment in regards to sustainability in corporate events.
As there are so many new developments in the country, sustainability has been considered at the inception – unlike other destinations where infrastructure may have been in place for longer than sustainability has been such a major issue.
When the Conference Centre Dublin (CCD) opens in 2010, it will be the first completely carbon neutral dedicated conference centre in the world. Meanhile Aviva Stadium is planning to be the first Irish venue with the (notoriously difficult to achieve) industry sustainability certificate BS8901 when it opens next May.
Add that to the transport systems being set in place, including the hugely succesful DublinBikes sharing scheme and we think that from 2010, Ireland will be one of, if not the green capital of Europe for meetings, events and conferences.
We have video interviews with Dermod Dwyer from the CCD and Cailin Keaney from Aviva Stadium appearing here soon. Both will speaking about their respective venue’s green credentials, so please watch this space.
